What is the world grid square system？
The grid square code is a key definition to generate grid square statistics data. In the case of Japan, we have the definition of grid square code in JIS (Japan Industrial Standards), which is standardized as JIS X0410. We propose a compatible extension of JIS X0410 to worldwide and call it world grid square system. The world grid square code can identify grids covering the world based on 6 layers. We can express a grid square by using from 6 to 13 digit sequence with accordance to its resolution.
Layer type length of sequences definition latitude length longitude length The total number 1st level 6 numeric digits 40 arc-minutes １ arc-degree 97,200 2nd level 8 numeric digits the 1st level grid square consists of 64 2nd level grid squares (8 times 8) 5 arc-minutes 7.5 arc-minutes 6,220,800 3rd level(basic) 10 numeric digits the 2nd level grid square consists of 100 3rd level grid squares (10 times 10) 30 arc-seconds 45 arc-seconds 622,080,000 4th level 11 numeric digits the 3rd level grid square consists of 4 4th level grid squares (2 times 2) 15 arc-seconds 22.5 arc-seconds 2,488,320,000 5th level 12 numeric digits the 4th level grid square consists of 4 5th level grid squares (2 times 2) 7.5 arc-seconds 11.25 arc-seconds 9,953,280,000 6th level 13 numeric digits the 5th level grid square consists of 4 6th level grid squares (2 times 2) 3.75 arc-seconds 5.625 arc-seconds 39,813,120,000
We define 2 numeric digits to the definition of JIS X0410 additionally. The first digit can take 1 to 8 (0th level) in order to express regional area in the world. The method to compute 1st level to 6th level sequences is the same as JIS X0410. In this sense, JIS X0410 is included in the world grid square system.
